Violeta Parra, the legendary Chilean folk

singer, was showing her arpilleras (tapestries

made of fabric remnants stitched on burlap) at

the 1960 Santiago Art Fair in Forestal Park.

Already known as a folklorist, she was showing

another side of her incredible talents. When

she saw me readying the camera, she gladly

stood up and posed in front of some of her

work. We then had a short conversation,

interrupted whenever other passerby stopped

to see her work. She was ready for all of them.

Violeta Parra, la legendaria folclorista

chilena, estaba mostrando sus arpilleras

(tapices hechos de sobras textiles cosidas

sobre yute o cánamo) en la Feria de Arte de

Santiago en el Parque Forestal en. Ya

conocida como folclorista, estaba mostrando

otra faceta de su increíble talento. Cuando me

vió dispuesto a tomar fotos, se paró

alegremente y posó en frente de su trabajo.

Luego tuvimos una corta conversación,

interrumpida más de una vez cuando algún

otro curioso se acercaba a ver su obra. Ella

estaba lista para todos. 1960.
