NEW YORK (AUGUST 29, 2009) - When Ted Kennedy (D-MA)

died, people from all over the world rushed to express their sorrow

and tell stories of a great man gone. Though I met him only briefly

in July of 1978 at a meeting that took place in the US Senate

condemning the human rights abuses of the Chilean military junta,

it was evident that he was and incredible personality. He lit up the

room with an impassioned speech condemning the Chilean

military junta and when he left the room it even seemed possible

to defeat the dictatorship and return Chile to democracy,

something that eventually happened, though a lot of work remains.

To say that he was charismatic is saying very little. An

unforgettable character for an unforgettable time.

NUEVA YORK, 29 DE AGOSTO, 2009 - Cuando Ted Kennedy (D-

MA) murió, gente de todo el mundo se apuró en expresar su pesar

y en relatar anécdotas de un gran hombre. A pesar de que lo

conocí brevemente en julio de 1978 en una reunión que se llevó a

cabo en el Senado de los EE.UU. en protesta de los abusos de

los derechos humanos de la junta militar chilena, no me cabió

duda que se trataba de una gran personalidad. Su presencia

encendió la sala con un apasionado discurso condenando a la

junta militar chilena y cuando dejó el lugar hasta pareció posible

derrotar a la dictadura, cosa que eventualmente sucedió, aunque

aún queda mucho por hacer. Decir que era carismático es poco.

Un personaje inolvidable en un tiempo inolvidable.
