LONG ISLAND CITY, NY (OCTOBER 22) - Eighteen

artists in the Wills Building in Long Island City opened their

studios to the public. Many have work in museum

collections and much of the work shown was impressive. A

variety of sculptors, painters, potters, and illustrators were

available to talk about their work and there was plenty of

food and drink. Among them we visiteds Selva Sanjinés

and Elliot Lable, which are shown here. Selva Sanjines

was recently commissioned to create an statuette for the

Gabriela Mistral Foundation of New York, which was

presented to the President of Chile, Michelle Bachelet

(see story in Home/ News). Specially striking was Elliot

Lable's work, inspired by nothing less than the brutality of

torture. His use of steel as its basic material only

enhances the hardness and harshness of its subject.

artistas del Wills Building de Long Island City abrieron sus

estudios al público. Muchos tienen obras en museos y

gran parte de la obra mostrada era impresionante. Una

variedad de escultores, pintores, ceramistas e ilustradores

estaban disponibles para conversar sobre su obra y

compartir bebidas y canapés. Entre los artistas visitados

estaba Selva Sanjinés y Eliot Lable, de los cuales

mostramos algunas fotos aquí. Selva Sanjinés fue

recientemente comisionada para hacer una estuatilla para

la Fundación Gabriela Mistral de Nueva York, la que fue

entregada a la presidenta de Chile, Michelle Bachelet (ver

nota en Portal/Noticias). Especial-mente impactante

resultó la obra de Lable que se inspira nada menos que

en la brutalidad de la tortura. Su utilización del acero

como materia prima aumenta aún más el efecto de su

obra.
