NEW YORK (AUGUST 18, 2011) -  A group of Chileans of the New

York Area gathered at Fifth Avenue and 34th Street in Manhattan

(where the Empire State Building is) to express their support to the

Chilean students, already in its third month of protest. The Students

want and end to the privatization and profit motive of Chilean

education. They want it to be free and guaranteed by the state, as it

was before the military coup of 1973. The present system is highly

discriminatory and students are indebted to unheard of levels if they

want to get a degree. The government of Sebastián Piñera, a center

right alliance, has so far refused to listen to the students demands

and responded with water cannons and tear gas. The students

maintain they will continue to protest until their demands are met. So

far public opinion is strongly in favor of the students and seems to be

growing by day, as well as international support.

NEW YORK (AGOSTO 18, 2011) -  Un grupo de chilenos del área de

Nueva York se reunió en la esquina de la Quinta Avenida y la Calle

34 en Manhattan (a los pies del Empire State Building) para

manifestar su apoyo a las protestas de los estudiantes chilenos que

ya llevan tres meses reclamando el fin del lucro y la privatización de

la educación chilena. Los estudiantes quieren educación gratuita y

garantizada por el estado, como era antes del golpe militar de 1973.

El actual sistema es altamente discriminatorio y los estudiantes

deben endeudarse a niveles increíbles para pbtener un título. El

gobierno de Sebastián Piñera, una coalición de centro-derecha, se

ha negado hasta ahora a acceder a las demandas de los

estudiantes y ha respondido con carros lanza agua y bombas

lagrimógenas. Los estudiantes sostienen que seguirán protestando

hasta que sus demandas sean datisfechas. Hasta hora la opinión

pública ha estado de parte de los estudiantes y este apoyo parece

crecer día a día, como también el apoyo internacional.
