half a century, have gone by and history stubornly repeats itself .
Mapuches from the same community I visted then, Los Lolocos, have
been protesting for the same problems as then, plus a few new ones.
The old problems come from the time Chile finally came to an
agreement at the end of the 19th Century with the Mapuche, who had
been fighting the "huincas" (Chileans) since the Conquistadores.
Simply put, the Mapuches say that the Chilean landowners have
been taking away their land using every trick in the book while the
government has looked the other way. As a consequence, the
Mapuche have been living in poverty and deprivation. The New
problems stem from the use by the government of an anti-terrorist law

NEW YORK (OCTUBRE 15, 2010) - Han pasado 49 años,
practicamente medio siglo, y la historia se repite porfiadamente.
Mapuches de la misma comunidad que visité en ese entonces, Los
Lolocos, han estado protestando por los mismos problemas de ese
entonces, además de algunos nuevos. Los viejos problemas vienen
del tiempo en que Chile finalmente llegó a un acuerdo a fines del
Siglo 19 con los mapuche, que habían estado en guerra con los
"huincas" desde la llegada de los conquistadores. En pocas
palabras, los mapuche dicen que los terratenientes chilenos han
estado quitándoles sus tierras usando todos los trucos legales
disponibles mientras el gobierno ha mirado para otro lado. Como
consecuencia de esto, los mapuche han estado viviendo en pobreza
y deprivación. Los nuevos problemas son un producto de la
aplicación de la ley anti-terrorista aprobada durante la dictadura de
Pinochet, ley que ha sido condenadoa por la Organización de
Estados Americanos (OEA), que le permite a la policía llevar a cabo
asaltos tipo grupos "SWAT", detener a personas sin causa,
