NEW YORK (SEPTEMBER 9, 2011) - On September 7 Gabriel

Valdés, well known Chilean politician and one of the leaders of the

Christian Democratic Party, died of a heart attack. He was born on

July 3, 1919 and was Foreign Minister of the Eduardo Frei Montalva

government, during which time he had to deal with delicate border

issues with Argentina, which were eventually arbitered by the Queen

of England and the Pope. He was also President of the Senate at

one point and in 1971 was named Under Secretary for Latin America

Development, where he remained until 1982. On returning to Chile

his political activities against the military junta cost him a time in jail.

He was one of the more active proponents of the plebiscite that

helped the return of democracy in Chile. Valdés was 92 when he

died and had two sons and a daughter; Maximiano, an orchestra

conductor, Juan Gabriel, a political scientist who was Foreign

Minister of the Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle government and Chilean

Ambassador to the UN and María Gracia, a journalist.

NEW YORK (SEPTIEMBRE 9, 2011) -  El recién pasado 7 de

septiembre falleció Gabriel Valdés Subercaseaux, nacido el 3 de

julio de 1919 en Santiago y conocido político democristiano. Durante

la presidencia de Eduardo Frei Montalva fue su Ministro de

Relaciones Exteriores y fue uno de los fundadores de la Falange

Nacional, antecesora del actual Partido Demócrata Cristiano. Como

Ministro de Relaciones Exteriores le tocó participar en varios

diferendos con Argentina, los que fueron arbitrados por la Reina

Isabel y el Papa. También se desempeñó como presidente del

Senado y en 1971 fue designado Subsecretario General de

Desarrollo de la América Latina, cargo en el que se mantuvo hasta

1982. En Chile fue un activo participante en el proceso del "NO" que

dió pávulo al plebiscito que volvió a Chile la democracia actual y sus

acividades le costaron un tiempo en prisión. Falleció a los 92 años

como consecuencia de un paro cardiorrespiratorio. Tuvo tres hijos:

Maximiano, director de orquesta, Juan Gabriel, cientista político y

Ministro de Relaciones exteriores de Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle y

María Gracia, periodista.
