NEW YORK (MAY 29, 2010) - Dennis Hopper, died Saturday of

prostate cancer at age 74. Although known as an actor and director,

he was also an activist in defense of human rights. In May 9, 1974 he

was the Master of Ceremonies at a concert in the Felt Forum of

Madison Square Garden in New York to protest the military coup in

Chile and its human rights abuses. The concert, organized by folk

legend Phil Ochs and Chilean dancer Claudio Badal, was a

smashing success and included such luminaries as Pete Seeger,

Bob Dylan, Aldo Guthrie and a host of others. His talents also

included photography and art and his work has been exhibited in the

US and abroad. Yet, as iconic as his movie career was, I will

remember him as one of the many who opposed the brutal

dictatorship in Chile.

29 de mayo a raíz de un cáncer a la próstata. Aunque era conocido

como actor y director de cine, también era un activista de los

derechos humanos en todo el mundo. El 9 de mayo de 1974 actuó

de maestro de ceremonias en un concierto en el Felt Forum del

Madison Square Garden de Nueva York en protesta del golpe militar

de Chile y los abusos a los derechos humanos. El concierto,

organizado por el legendario folclorista Phil Ochs y el bailarín

chileno Claudio Badal, fue un éxito total que incluyó a luminarias

como Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, Aldo Guthrie y otros. Sus talentos

incluyeron la fotografía y la pintura y sus obras fueron expuestas
