While in prison for assault with intent to murder, Eldridge

Cleaver wrote Soul on Ice, published in 1967 after his

release in 1966. He joined the Oakland-based Black

Panther Party, serving as Minister of Information and

becoming influential in the black power movement.

Charged with attempted murder after a confrontation

between the Panthers and Oakland police he jumped bail

to flee to Algeria. Cleaver eventually fled Algeria and lived

underground for a time in France and then in Cuba.

Cleaver returned to the United States in 1975, where

the news of his return became a big story. After hours of

waiting in the airport and expecting a statement or some

sort of a press conference, the press was astounded and

surprised when Cleaver was rushed through directly to a

car and taken to an unknown location. The chaos that

ensued was simply monumental, with several

photographers and reporters trampled by their colleagues

in the rush to photograph the prodigal son. 1975.
