Unfortunately, New York is no longer the same city; the immense diversity of its people and its neighborhoods is fast disappearing, while uniformity becomes more and more evident and choking. Llegué a esta ciudad en 1990. La ciudad me fascinó. I graduated from Baruch College. In 1990 I began teaching at CUNY and then in SUNY. I am in New York since June of 2001. Modeling for artists is one of the jobs I discovered here. It’s a simple job, very relaxing. New York has totally seduced me with its diversity and its tolerance but I feel very nostalgic about Chile. 2001. Estoy en Nueva York desde junio del 2001. I was born here and I also lived in Europe and arrived in Chile when I was 14.  Curiously, I happened to live both September 11 -the Chilean and the New York one. I like to think that the wave of solidarity that arose among Newyorkers was as big as the towers that fell. Neoyorquina con raíces chilenas, más bien, ¿no? Nací acá, también viví en Europa y recién llegué a Chile a vivir a los 14 años. Curiosamente, me tocó vivir los dos once de septiembre -el chileno y el neoyorquino. At this moment, the urge is to stop being unilingual. Besides, this fast and colorful city is a festival for the senses and for the moment I feast visually, I write, I absorb information, I visit museums, galleries, bars and I read... Then, I am here and now, living in New York, rehearsing a theater work and visiting Coney Island anytime I can. En este momento la urgencia es dejar de ser unilinguish. Ademas esta vertiginosa y colorinche ciudad es un festival para los sentidos y por el momento me alimento visualmente, escribo, fagocito información, visito museos, galerias, bares, y leo... I arrived in New York from Madagascar in 1980 and immediately joined the fight against the Chilean dictatorship. I miss my family before the coup, before my father died of sadness. I remember the Andes, the desert in the north, the beaches with their unique aroma, the countryside with its eucalyptus and poplar trees. Llegué a Nueva York desde Madagascar en 1980 y me integré inmediatamente a la lucha en contra de la dictadura. Echo de menos a mi familia antes del golpe, antes que mi padre muriera de pena. I am the daughter of a Chilean and a Spanish immigrant. When I was 20 years old I decided to come to New York. To be in this country, with the people that are around me and doing what I like makes me an immensely happy woman. And, of course, having been born in my beloved Chile. Soy hija de una chilena y un inmigrante español. Cuando yo tenía 20 años me decidí a venir a Nueva York. Estar en este país, junto a la gente que me rodea y haciendo lo que me gusta, me hace una mujer inmensamente feliz. I arrived in New York in March of 1989. I was 18  and I was coming to meet my family and to study art and dance. It was hard at the beginning but I realized that I was more of here than there. I graduated from Hunter College and went to Chile and I found my roots again. But I was born with a mission so I returned to New York. Llegué a Nueva York en marzo del 89. Tenía 18 años y venía a conocer a mi familia.  Al principio fue muy duro, pero me di cuenta que ya era  más de acá que de allá. Me gradué de Hunter College y me fui a pensar a Chile y me reencontré con mis raíces. I remember how difficult it was to get used to this city with its rhythm and a language that I hardly knew. At the same time, the idea of sharing my daily life with a population of such diversity was fascinating. Here one learns to live with the world. As the song says, "If I can make it here, I can make it anywhere."  - Llegué a Nueva York en 1985. Recuerdo lo difícil que fue acostumbrarme a esta ciudad con su ritmo y un idioma que yo apenas conocía. A la misma vez, fue fascinante la idea de compartir mi vida diaria con una población tan diversa. Aquí se aprende a vivir con el mundo. I lmoved to New York City in 1968 for the same reason millions of immigrants in the world before me had done so: to build a better life. I knew that what I wanted to do in dance would be difficult in Chile, with its conservative, patriarchal traditions. I needed to learn, to find other artists who believed in the same principles I did. Me vine a Nueva York en 1968 por la misma razón que millones de inmigrantes antes que yo: buscando una mejor vida. Yo sabía que lo que quería hacer en danza era difícil en Chile, con sus tradiciones conservadoras y patriarcales.
