"bolero" interpreters of Latin America died in Santiago, Chile at 85.
He was also a well known actor with more than 33 films, including "A
Fistfull of Dollars" by Sergio Leone and with Clint Eastwood.
I met Antonio in 1948 or 1949 at the swimming pool of the
University of Chile in Los Leones, Santiago. where I went daily with
my brother Hernán during the summer vacation of that year. He was
known then as "Espaldita" due to his extraordinary physique. A few
years later I saw him as a member of a Spanish group singing "El
beso (The Kiss)" in Viña del Mar. Then, in 1962 I saw him again in
Buenos Aires where he starred in the first variety TV show in
Latinamerica, "The Show of Antonio Prieto." He remembered
perfectly well about the days at the swimming pool and asked about
the other regulars, specially "Pachamama," one the the real
characters. I had'nt seen any of them either, but it was good talking
about those days. As it happens all too often in life, I never saw
Antonio again, but he is one of those persons you just don't forget. A
marvelous human being.

NEW YORK (JULIO 15, 2011) - Antoniio Prieto, uno de los más
grandes intérpretes de olero de latinoamérica murió el 14 de juio en
Santiago a la edad de 85 años. Fue también un conocido actor con
más de 33 filmes a su haber, incluyendo "Un puñado de dólares" de
Sergio Leone y con Clint Eastwood.
Conocí a Antonio prieto en 1948 o 1949 en la piscina de la
Universidad de Chile en Los Leones, Santiago, adonde iba todos los
días con mi hermano Hernán durante las vacaciones de verano de
ese año. En ese entonces lo conocíamos a Antonio como "Espaldita"
debido a su extraordinario físico. Años después lo vi en Viña del Mar
como miembro de un grupo español y recuerdo su versión de "El
beso". Finalmente, en 1962 lo vi en Buenos Aires, donde era la
estella del primer programa de variedades de latinoamérica, "El
show de Antonio Prieto". Se acordó perfectamente de los tiempos de
la piscina y me preguntó sobre los otors miembros de la pandilla,
especialmente el "Pachmama", un verdadero personaje. Yo también
había dejado de verlos, pero fue bueno recordar esos días.
Como lamentablemente pasa muy seguido en la vida, dejé de
ver a Antonio, pero él era una de esas perosnas que uno no olvida.
Un ser humano maravilloso.
