known Chilean writer and Human Rights activists came to
New York to participate in the Human Rights Film Festival,
where “A Promise to the Dead: The Exile Journey of Ariel
Dorfman,” was shown as the opening-night selection of this
year’s Human Rights Watch International Film Festival.
The Chilean Ambassador to the UN, Heraldo Muñoz,
offered a buffet-diner in his honor at the ambassador's
residence.
Referring to the film, The New York Times said, "it
may not be the strongest of the program’s 19 feature-
length films, but its rambling portrait of Mr. Dorfman, the
Chilean playwright (“Death and the Maiden”), novelist and
essayist, is a profile in courage colored with the anxiety of
a human rights activist faced with painful moral choices."
The NYT continues", To die a martyr or to live to bear
witness: that is the question. You can read about men and
women who stand up to injustice and feel a shuddering
admiration. But to absorb a documentary film about such a
person is a more intense and potentially life-changing
experience.
"One theme of “A Promise to the Dead” is the pain of
exile. Mr. Dorfman, who was born in Argentina, grew up in
New York and settled in Chile in 1954, was a cultural
adviser to the Chilean president Salvador Allende, whose
democratic socialist philosophy he embraced
wholeheartedly. He now teaches at Duke University.
"Directed by Peter Raymont, who also made the
excellent Rwanda-based documentary “Shake Hands With
the Devil: The Journey of Roméo Dallaire,” the movie
follows Mr. Dorfman around the streets of Santiago on a
return trip to Chile. He meets old friends and recalls the
tumultuous time before the military coup that ousted
Allende and installed the repressive regime of Augusto
Pinochet. Under Pinochet thousands were murdered and
Mr. Dorfman was driven into exile."
The festival ran through June 26 at the Walter Reade
Theater, Lincoln Center.

NUEVA YORK (JUNIO 14, 2008) - Ariel Dorfman, el
conocido escritor y activista de derechos humanos chileno
vino a Nueva York a participar en el Festival de Cine de
Derechos Humanos, donde "Una promesa a los muertos:
el largo exilio de Ariel Dorfman,” fue seleccionado para
inaugurar el festival de Human Rights Watch International.
El embajador de Chile ante la ONU, Heraldo Muñoz,
ofreció una comida-buffet en su honor en la residencia del
embajador.
El New York Times dijo en un artículo sobre el filme,
"puede que no sea el mejor de los 19 largo-metrajes del
festival, pero el retrato de Dorfman, el escritor chileno de
"La muerte y la doncella", novelista y ensayista, es un
perfil de coraje coloreado con la ansiedad de un activista
de los derechos humanos enfrentado a dolorosas
decisiones". La cuestión, sigue el NYT, "es morir como un
mártir o vivir para dar testimnio. Se puede leer sobre
hombres y mujeres que enfrentan la injusticia y sentir una
gran admiración. Pero absorver un documental sobre una
tal persona es una experiencia más intensa y
potencialmente puede alterar el curso de la vida.

Dallaire) el filme sigue a Dorfman por las calles de
Santiago durante un viaje de retorno. Dorfman se
encuentra con viejos amigos y juntos recuerdan los
tumultuosos días antes del golpe militar que derrocó a
Salvador Allende e instaló el represivo régimen de
Pinochet, durante cuyo gobierno miles fueron asesinados
y Dorfman fue obligado a salir al exilio".
El festival duró hasta el 26 de junio en el Walter
Reade Theater, Lincoln Center.
