most exciting and surprising campaign that I can remember in the
US, the much awaited 2008 election came and went and the results
couldn't be more dramatic or historic. Many things that couldn't
happen did happen and some that could happen did not.
In all the years I have lived in the US, I had never seen such an
intense and hard fought primary as in these election. Primaries were
boring and un interesting, just a few lines in the political section of
papers. This time, almost from the very beginning, it was different in
both parties, totally different. Also different was the use of the internet,
specially by the Obama campaign, and this fact will resonate for
many years. And different was the outrageous amount of money
spent, more than $2 billion dollars!
In the end it was a great experience. It remains to be seen
whether the promises, both implicit and actual, do bare fruit. But
besides the political promises, history was made, no doubt about it.

NUEVA YORK (NOVIEMBRE 5, 2008) - Después de casi dos años
de la más excitante y sorprendente campaña que tengo memoria en
los EE.UU., la muy esperada elección de 2008 llegó y se fue y los
resultados dificilmente podrían haber sido más dramáticos o
históricos. Muchas cosas que no podían pasar pasaron y muchas
que podían pasar no pasaron.
En todos los años que he vivido en los EE.UU. nunca había
visto elecciones primarias tan disputadas como las de esta elección.
Las primarias siempre han sido aburridas y poco interesantes, sólo
algunas líneas en las páginas poiticas de la prensa. Esta vez, casi
desde el comienzo, la cosa fue diferente en ambos partidos,
totalmente diferente. También fue diferente el uso el uso de la
internet, especialmente por parte de la campaña de Obama, y este
hecho va a resonar por muchos años. Y también fue diferente la
extraordinaria cantidad de dinero que se gastó en esta campaña;
¡más de $2 mil millones de dólares!
Al final de cuentas fue una gran experiencia. Queda por ver si
las promesas, tanto implícitas como de echo, se van a cumplir. Pero
fuera de las promesas políticas, el evento fue histórico, sin duda
alguna.
